Coral Bay is a tiny coastal settlement on the western edge of the Ningaloo Reef, offering some of the most accessible snorkelling and diving in Australia. With its powdery white sand, turquoise water, and direct reef access from the beach, this is a place where you can wade out and be surrounded by turtles, rays, and colourful fish within minutes. It's a laid-back, off-the-grid destination that feels a world away from the crowds, yet delivers world-class marine encounters.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkelling at the Point – The main beach at Coral Bay leads straight onto the Ningaloo Reef. Swim out a short distance to find coral gardens, green sea turtles, and reef sharks. Look for the resident dugongs in the seagrass beds.
- Whale Shark & Manta Ray Tours – From March to October, boat tours take you to swim alongside the gentle giants of the reef. Manta rays are present year-round, with peak sightings from May to November.
- Glass-Bottom Boat & Kayaking – For a dry option, glass-bottom boat tours reveal the reef's wonders without getting wet. Kayaking over the shallow lagoon is a peaceful way to spot marine life.
- Ningaloo Reef Walk – At low tide, you can walk across the reef flats (with care) to explore tidal pools teeming with starfish, crabs, and small fish.
- Sunset at the Headland – Walk to the headland at the southern end of the bay for panoramic views of the coast and the chance to see humpback whales migrating past (June–November).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days in Coral Bay, which is enough time to take a whale shark or manta ray tour, enjoy a full day of snorkelling, and relax on the beach. If you're a keen diver or want to explore the southern reaches of the reef, consider 4 days. The pace here is slow – there are no traffic lights or supermarkets – so factor in time for long lunches and sunset drinks. Coral Bay works well as a stop on a self-drive itinerary between Exmouth and Carnarvon.
