Cape Range National Park is a rugged, arid wilderness on Western Australia's remote Ningaloo Coast. Here, ancient limestone ranges meet turquoise waters, creating a landscape of dramatic gorges, white-sand beaches, and world-class snorkeling. The park is a haven for wildlife, including black-footed rock wallabies and over 200 bird species, while the adjacent Ningaloo Reef offers intimate encounters with whale sharks and sea turtles. This is a place where the outback meets the ocean, offering a truly unique Australian experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Ningaloo Reef – Snorkel or dive right off the beach at Turquoise Bay or Oyster Stacks to swim with turtles, rays, and colorful coral; between March and August, you can even swim with whale sharks.
- Yardie Creek Gorge – Take a scenic boat tour or hike the 2.5 km trail along this stunning gorge carved into the limestone, spotting rock wallabies and ospreys.
- Vlamingh Head Lighthouse – Climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline and the reef; it's also a prime whale-watching spot during migration season (June–November).
- Charles Knife Canyon – Drive the dramatic gravel road to the canyon's edge for sweeping views of the park and the Cape Range; a short walk leads to the gorge lookout.
- Beachcombing at Pilgramunna (Lakeside) – Explore this remote beach with its crystal-clear waters and coral rubble, perfect for a quiet picnic and spotting shorebirds.
- Milyering Discovery Centre – Visit this interpretive center to learn about the park's Aboriginal heritage, geology, and marine life through interactive displays.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two full days to experience the park's highlights. One day can be dedicated to snorkeling the reef and relaxing on beaches, while the second day is ideal for exploring the gorges and hiking. If you have extra time, a third day allows for a deeper dive into the canyons or a boat trip on Yardie Creek. The park is best visited during the cooler months (April to October) when temperatures are pleasant for outdoor activities.
