Connells Lagoon
Connells Lagoon is a serene, semi-permanent waterhole tucked away in the heart of the Red Centre, about 30 km south of Tennant Creek. This oasis offers a surprising contrast to the surrounding arid spinifex plains, attracting abundant birdlife and providing a peaceful spot for camping, fishing, and swimming. It's a true off-the-beaten-path gem for travellers seeking solitude and a connection with the outback's quieter side.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching paradise: Spot pelicans, black swans, ducks, and a variety of waterbirds that flock to the lagoon, especially after rain.
- Camping under the stars: The basic campground offers a true outback experience with fire pits, picnic tables, and a drop toilet – perfect for stargazing.
- Swimming and fishing: Cool off in the lagoon's clear waters (check conditions) or try your luck catching barramundi and catfish.
- Walking trails: Explore the short bushwalk around the lagoon, where you'll see spinifex, ghost gums, and perhaps a wedge-tailed eagle circling overhead.
- Aboriginal cultural significance: The area is part of the Warumungu people's traditional lands, and the lagoon holds deep spiritual importance – treat the site with respect.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a night or two camping at Connells Lagoon, arriving in the late afternoon to enjoy the golden light over the water and a campfire dinner. If you're not camping, a couple of hours is enough for a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. The lagoon is best visited between April and October, when temperatures are milder and the water level is reliable.
