Arltunga, deep in the Northern Territory's red heart, is a ghost town that whispers tales of gold-rush dreams and harsh outback realities. Once the largest inland gold settlement in central Australia, today its weathered stone buildings and scattered ruins offer a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the past. Set against a backdrop of fiery red ranges and endless blue skies, this is a place for those who love history, solitude, and the raw beauty of the desert.
Highlights & What to See
- Arltunga Historical Reserve: Explore the well-preserved stone police station, battery mill, and miner's camp. The visitor centre has excellent displays on the gold rush era.
- MacDonnell Ranges: The spectacular East MacDonnell Ranges frame the settlement. Drive through dramatic gorges and spot wallabies at dusk.
- Gold Battery Ruins: Wander among the old crushing batteries and poppet heads that hint at the gruelling work of early miners.
- N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park: Only 40 km away, this sacred site features thousands of ancient rock carvings (petroglyphs) and a short walking trail.
- Trephina Gorge Nature Park: A stunning oasis with permanent waterholes, red cliffs, and excellent bushwalking – perfect for a midday break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Arltunga itself can be explored in a half-day – allow two to three hours to tour the reserve and soak up the atmosphere. To fully appreciate the wider East MacDonnell Ranges, plan a full day driving the loop from Alice Springs, including stops at N'Dhala Gorge and Trephina Gorge. Overnight camping at Trephina or nearby stations lets you catch the stunning desert sunrise.
