The Red Centre Way is the ultimate outback road trip, a 500-kilometre loop that connects Alice Springs with the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This sealed road cuts through the heart of Australia’s desert, past ancient mountain ranges, ochre-red gorges, and vast spinifex plains. Driving it is a journey into the soul of the continent, where the light shifts from fiery dawn to star-drenched night skies. Don’t just rush to Uluru – the highlights along this route are as memorable as the destination itself.
Highlights & What to See
- West MacDonnell Ranges: A series of spectacular gorges and waterholes – hike to the top of Simpsons Gap, swim at Ellery Creek Big Hole, and watch the sunset over Ormiston Gorge.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): The Rim Walk is a must – a 6km loop with stunning views into the canyon’s sheer sandstone walls and the lush ‘Garden of Eden’ below.
- Uluru (Ayers Rock): Witness the rock change colour at sunrise and sunset, walk the base trail (10.6km), and learn about its cultural significance to the Anangu people.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas): The domed rock formations are equally awe-inspiring – the Valley of the Winds walk offers a challenging but rewarding circuit through the domes.
- Alice Springs: Start or end your journey here – visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the School of the Air, and the Alice Springs Desert Park.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a minimum of 4 to 5 days to drive the full loop and enjoy the key stops without rushing. A good pace is 2 nights near Alice Springs to explore the West MacDonnells, 1 night at Kings Canyon (the Kings Canyon Resort is a good base), and 2 nights at Uluru (Ayers Rock Resort) to see both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. If you have more time, add a night at a station stay or bush camp for a deeper outback experience. The drive itself is easy with a 2WD, but fill up with fuel at every opportunity – distances between services are long.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
