Perched on the northeastern tip of Kangaroo Island, Penneshaw is a salty, windswept gateway town that feels a world away from the mainland. With its ferry terminal, sheltered beaches, and a surprising little penguin colony, it's the perfect base for exploring the island's wild east coast. The town's relaxed pace and dramatic coastal scenery make it a memorable stop on any South Australian road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Kangaroo Island Penguin Centre: Join a guided night tour to watch the world's smallest penguins waddle ashore to their burrows — an unforgettable wildlife encounter.
- Penneshaw Beach: A family-friendly stretch of sand with calm waters for swimming and kayaking, plus excellent views across Backstairs Passage to the mainland.
- Frenchman's Rock: A historic boulder inscribed by a French explorer in 1803, tucked away on the headland — a quirky slice of maritime history.
- Kingscote (day trip): Head 50 km west to the island's main town for more dining options and the fascinating Kangaroo Island Marine Centre.
- Seal Bay Conservation Park: About 60 km west, this is a must-do for up-close (but guided) encounters with a colony of Australian sea lions lounging on the beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers use Penneshaw as a 1–2 night stopover, arriving by ferry from Cape Jervis and then heading west. Give yourself at least half a day to explore the town's beaches and the penguin centre (book the evening tour in advance). If you're on a self-drive circuit of the island, two nights here allows a relaxed pace to also visit Seal Bay and Flinders Chase National Park further west.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
