Nitmiluk National Park, carved over millennia by the ancient Katherine River, is a breathtaking landscape of towering sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, and lush pockets of monsoon forest. Just 30 kilometres northeast of Katherine, this park offers a quintessential outback experience where Indigenous Jawoyn culture and dramatic natural beauty converge. Here you can paddle the tranquil waters of Katherine Gorge, hike to panoramic lookouts, and learn about the Dreamtime stories that have shaped this sacred land.
Highlights & What to See
- Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk Gorge): The park’s centrepiece, a series of 13 gorges best explored by canoe, kayak, or guided boat tour. The sheer sandstone walls and reflections on the water are unforgettable.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A stunning cascade and natural swimming hole, perfect for a refreshing dip after a short walk. The surrounding escarpment offers great views.
- Jatbula Trail: A legendary 62-kilometre, 5-day trek through the park, passing waterfalls, rock art sites, and sweeping vistas. It’s a bucket-list hike for experienced bushwalkers.
- Nitmiluk Visitor Centre: Start here for cultural exhibits, maps, and insights into Jawoyn traditions. Don’t miss the short film on the gorge’s formation.
- Sunset Cruise: A magical way to see the gorge as the light turns the cliffs gold and orange. Wildlife like wallabies and birds often appear along the banks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the main gorge area and Edith Falls, but to truly appreciate the park, plan for two days. This allows time for a morning canoe trip (or boat tour), an afternoon hike to a lookout, and a relaxing swim at Leliyn. If you’re tackling the Jatbula Trail, budget 5 days. For a quick stop, a half-day can cover a short gorge cruise and a walk to the first viewpoint.
