Nitmiluk Gorge (also known as Katherine Gorge) is a stunning series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, set within Nitmiluk National Park, about 30 kilometres from Katherine in the Northern Territory. This is a place of immense natural beauty and deep Indigenous significance, owned and managed by the Jawoyn people. The towering ochre cliffs, tranquil waterways, and abundant wildlife make it an unmissable stop on any Red Centre itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge Cruises: The best way to experience the scale and serenity of the gorges is on a guided boat cruise, which takes you through the first two or three gorges, with opportunities to spot freshwater crocodiles, eagles, and ancient rock art.
- Canoeing & Kayaking: Rent a canoe or kayak to explore the gorges at your own pace – you can paddle through the first gorge and beyond, with camping permits available for overnight trips deeper into the system.
- Walking Trails: A network of walks ranges from the short Butterfly Gorge Walk (a 1.2 km return to a hidden side gorge) to the challenging Jatbula Trail, a 5-day, 62 km trek from Nitmiluk to Leliyn (Edith Falls) passing waterfalls, rock art, and savannah woodlands.
- Scenic Flights: For a jaw-dropping perspective, take a helicopter or fixed-wing scenic flight over the gorges – the aerial view of the deep, winding chasms is unforgettable.
- Swimming: Swim in the calm, croc-free sections of the river (check current conditions) at designated spots like 17 Mile Billabong or the plunge pools along the Jatbula Trail.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at Nitmiluk: a morning cruise or canoe session, a short walk in the afternoon, and perhaps a scenic flight. If you're keen on hiking, plan for two days – one for the gorge itself and one for a section of the Jatbula Trail or a visit to nearby Leliyn (Edith Falls). The dry season (May to October) offers the best weather; in the wet season, some trails and cruises may be limited.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine: The town of Katherine is the service hub, with the Katherine Museum, the School of the Air, and the famous Katherine Hot Springs – perfect for a relaxing soak after exploring the gorge.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): Just 30 km north of Katherine, this beautiful series of waterfalls and plunge pools offers excellent swimming and a short, scenic walk to the upper falls.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: About 30 km south of Katherine, these limestone caves are home to rare ghost bats and offer guided tours through impressive stalactite formations.
- Katherine Outback Experience: A working property and show that demonstrates station life, horse training, and mustering – a fun, authentic outback experience.
- Nitmiluk National Park (further exploration): Beyond the gorge, the park has remote camping spots, the Jatbula Trail (book ahead), and lesser-known gorges like Windolf Lookout and Smitt Rock Lookout.
