Just a 90-minute drive from Darwin, Litchfield National Park offers a refreshing alternative to the more famous Kakadu. With its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, and ancient termite mounds, this compact park is a paradise for swimmers, hikers, and nature lovers. The sealed roads make it an easy self-drive destination, and the lack of crocodiles in most swimming spots means you can plunge into the water without a second thought.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls: A stunning double waterfall plunging into a large, deep pool perfect for swimming. A short walk leads to a viewing platform, or take the longer track down to the water.
- Wangli Falls: Perhaps the most iconic spot, with a wide curtain of water and a large swimming hole. The surrounding walk offers great views of the escarpment.
- Buley Rockholes: A series of natural rock pools connected by small cascades – ideal for a relaxing soak and a picnic.
- Termite Mounds: Marvel at the magnetic termite mounds, which are aligned north-south to regulate temperature. The nearby cathedral termite mounds are even more impressive in size.
- Tabletop Track: A 39 km loop that takes in many of the park's highlights, including waterfalls and monsoon forests. It's a challenging multi-day hike for experienced bushwalkers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors explore Litchfield as a day trip from Darwin, which is enough to see the main waterfalls and termite mounds. However, to truly appreciate the park, consider staying at least two days. This allows you to hike the Tabletop Track or explore the quieter western side, including the Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) and the secluded Surprise Creek Falls.
