Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) is a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, offering dramatic cliffs, ancient rock art, and abundant wildlife. This is a place where the outback meets water – you can paddle, cruise, or hike through landscapes that shift from ochre to deep green after the wet season.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge Cruise: The classic way to experience the scale of the gorges – opt for a 2- or 4-gorge cruise to see towering cliffs, freshwater crocodiles, and birdlife.
- Kayaking & Canoeing: Rent a kayak to explore the lower gorges at your own pace; early morning paddles are magical with still water and reflections.
- Jatbula Trail: A 5-6 day, 62 km walk from Nitmiluk to Leliyn (Edith Falls), passing waterfalls, rock pools, and Indigenous rock art sites. Permits required.
- Southern Walks (Butterfly Gorge & Pat’s Lookout): Shorter hikes leading to swimming holes and panoramic views over the gorge system.
- Nitmiluk Visitor Centre & Cultural Experiences: Learn about the Jawoyn people’s connection to the land, and join a guided tour to see ancient rock art galleries.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day on a gorge cruise and a short walk, but to really soak it in, plan for 2–3 days. That gives you time for a half-day kayak, a sunset cruise, and a hike on the Jatbula Trail or to Leliyn (Edith Falls). If you’re on a self-drive itinerary from Darwin to Alice Springs, Katherine Gorge is the perfect overnight stop.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
