Karlu Karlu, also known as the Devils Marbles, is one of the Northern Territory's most surreal and sacred landscapes. Scattered across a wide valley, these giant, rounded granite boulders seem to defy gravity, some precariously balanced on top of each other. For the Warumungu people, this place holds deep spiritual significance – these are the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent. The light at sunrise and sunset sets the ochre rocks ablaze, and the silence of the outback is broken only by birdsong. A must-see on any Red Centre road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunrise or Sunset: The rocks glow deep orange and red. The main lookout is perfect for photos.
- Self-guided Walking Track: A 20-minute loop among the boulders lets you get up close to the formations and spot wildlife like wallabies and birds.
- Aboriginal Cultural Significance: Interpretive signs explain the Dreamtime stories. Respect the sacred site – don't climb on the rocks.
- Stargazing: Far from light pollution, the night sky here is breathtaking, with the Milky Way visible to the naked eye.
- Photography: The juxtaposition of giant boulders against the endless blue sky makes for iconic outback images.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the walking track and watching sunset. If you're camping nearby, an overnight stay allows for both sunset and sunrise views. It's a popular, quick stop on the Stuart Highway – you can easily fit it in a day's drive between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – 4 hours south, the hub of the Red Centre with cultural sites and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Tennant Creek – 1.5 hours north, a historic gold-mining town with the Battery Hill Mining Centre.
- Davenport Ranges National Park – 2 hours east, offering rugged outback landscapes and 4WD tracks.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – further south (a long day drive) but iconic if you're on an extended Red Centre itinerary.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – gorges, waterholes, and hiking west of Alice Springs.
