Erldunda is a tiny roadhouse settlement at the crossroads of the Stuart and Lasseter Highways, deep in the Red Centre. It's a classic outback pit stop — part service station, part campground, part wildlife park — and the jumping-off point for trips to Uluru and Kings Canyon. The surrounding spinifex plains and red dirt stretch to the horizon, and the night sky here is immense. For self-drive travellers, it's a practical place to refuel, stretch your legs, and get a taste of remote station life.
Highlights & What to See
- Erldunda Desert Park — a small but engaging wildlife park where you can see emus, kangaroos, dingoes, and a walk-in aviary with colourful native birds. It's a great spot for families or anyone keen to meet outback animals up close.
- The Crossroads — the junction of the Stuart and Lasseter Highways is a landmark in itself. From here, head west to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (about 200 km) or continue north to Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Sunset over the Red Centre — the low scrub and red earth catch the late-afternoon light beautifully. Pull over anywhere along the highway for a classic outback sunset.
- Night sky stargazing — far from any major town, Erldunda offers some of the darkest skies in Australia. On a clear night, the Milky Way arches overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stop for an hour or two to refuel, grab a meal, and visit the wildlife park. If you're camping, an overnight stay is worthwhile for the full outback sunset and sunrise experience. Erldunda is best used as a strategic stop between Alice Springs and Uluru (about 4 hours from each) rather than a destination in itself.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park — the iconic monolith and domed rock formations, about a 2-hour drive west.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) — spectacular sandstone gorge with the Rim Walk, about 3 hours north via the Luritja Road.
- West MacDonnell Ranges — a chain of gorges, waterholes, and walking trails stretching west of Alice Springs, about 2.5 hours north.
- Alice Springs — the Red Centre's hub with cultural sites, galleries, and the Larapinta Trail, about 4 hours north.
- Mount Conner (Attila) — a flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance.
