Just a short drive east of Alice Springs, Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park offers a striking introduction to the East MacDonnell Ranges. These twin gaps, carved by ancient waterways through the quartzite ridge, are not only geologically fascinating but also culturally significant to the Arrernte people. The park is a serene spot for a walk, a picnic, or simply to soak up the ochre hues of the Central Australian landscape at sunrise or sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- Emily Gap (Anthwerrke): A short, easy walk leads to a waterhole fringed by river red gums. Look for ochre paintings on the cliff faces—these are important Aboriginal art sites depicting ancestral stories.
- Jessie Gap (Arruthe): Slightly larger than Emily Gap, Jessie Gap features a more open gorge with a sandy creek bed. The walk here is equally rewarding, with birdlife and dramatic rock formations.
- Scenic Drives: The park is part of the Ross Highway scenic drive; continue east to Trephina Gorge or N'Dhala Gorge for more dramatic landscapes.
- Picnic Spots: Both gaps have shaded picnic tables—perfect for a relaxed lunch surrounded by the rusty red of the MacDonnell Ranges.
- Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for rock wallabies, euros, and a variety of birds, especially around the permanent waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring both gaps, which are only 2 km apart. If you're keen on photography or a longer walk, allow half a day. The gaps are easily combined with a morning or afternoon self-drive along the East MacDonnell Ranges, making them a perfect stop on a day trip from Alice Springs.
