Deep in the Red Centre, about 30 kilometres south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park offers a surprising subterranean escape from the outback heat. This ancient limestone cave system, formed over 500 million years ago, is a cool, moist wonderland of stalactites, stalagmites and delicate helictites. Guided tours reveal fascinating geology and the park's role as a refuge for rare bats and other wildlife. It's an easy detour on the way to or from Katherine Gorge, and a must for anyone curious about what lies beneath the red dirt.
Highlights & What to See
- Cutta Cutta Caves Guided Tour – The only way to see the caves is on a 45-minute ranger-led tour. You'll descend into the main chamber, marvel at the 'Cathedral' and learn about the cave's formation and the resident orange horseshoe bats.
- Wildlife spotting above ground – The park is a haven for birds and wallabies. Keep an eye out for red-tailed black cockatoos and the elusive short-eared rock-wallaby on the nature walk.
- Nature Walk – A 1.2 km loop trail through monsoonal vine forest, a rare ecosystem in the dry centre. Interpretive signs explain the plants and their uses by the local Jawoyn people.
- Picnic area – Shady tables and gas barbecues make it a good spot for lunch after your cave tour. Watch for goannas scavenging for scraps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1.5 to 2 hours. The cave tour itself takes about 45 minutes, leaving plenty of time to walk the nature loop and enjoy a picnic. If you're driving from Katherine, it's an easy half-day trip, especially combined with a swim at Katherine Hot Springs or a cruise on Katherine Gorge.
