Hidden in the red heart of Australia, Palm Valley is a lush, ancient oasis within Finke Gorge National Park, about 140km west of Alice Springs. This desert sanctuary is home to the rare red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae), a living relic from a wetter prehistoric era. The dramatic sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and permanent waterholes create a surreal contrast to the surrounding arid landscape, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley Walk – A 5km loop trail through the heart of the valley, winding among thousands of red cabbage palms, past rocky outcrops and seasonal creeks. The best time is early morning or late afternoon for soft light and wildlife.
- Kalarranga Lookout – A short, steep climb rewards you with panoramic views over the valley and the Finke River, the world's oldest river system.
- Finke River 4WD Track – The approach to Palm Valley is an adventure in itself, requiring a high-clearance 4WD to cross sandy riverbeds and rocky terrain. The drive through the ancient river valley is spectacular.
- Permanent Waterholes – Cool off in the shady rock pools, home to tiny fish and dragonflies. They're perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
- Desert Wildlife – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, dingoes, and a variety of birdlife, including the majestic wedge-tailed eagle.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day for Palm Valley from Alice Springs, including the 4WD drive (allow 2–3 hours each way). To fully experience the valley, plan to spend at least 3–4 hours walking the main trails and enjoying the waterholes. If you have a camping setup, overnighting at the Finke Gorge National Park campground adds a magical sunset and sunrise dimension. For a relaxed pace, stay two days and explore the longer walks like the Mpaara Walk (2.5km) and the Valley Loop.
