Nitmiluk
Nitmiluk National Park, centred on the magnificent Katherine Gorge system, is a stunning showcase of the Top End's ancient landscapes. Carved over millennia by the Katherine River, the park's 13 gorges offer dramatic sandstone cliffs, tranquil waterways, and rich Indigenous heritage. This is a place for immersive nature experiences — from paddling through gorges to hiking on escarpment trails, all under the vast Territory sky.
Highlights & What to See
- Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk Gorge): The heart of the park. Take a boat cruise (guided by traditional owners) or hire a canoe to explore the sheer-walled gorges. The second gorge is accessible only by water or a short walk.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A series of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools, perfect for a refreshing swim. The walk to the upper pool offers panoramic views.
- Jatbula Trail: A legendary 62 km, 5-day trek from Nitmiluk to Leliyn, passing waterfalls, rock art sites, and savannah woodlands. Book well in advance.
- Nitmiluk Visitor Centre: Learn about the Jawoyn people's culture and the park's ecology. Don't miss the short film and the art gallery.
- Scenic Flights: See the gorges from above on a fixed-wing or helicopter flight — an unforgettable perspective on the scale and geology.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Nitmiluk at least a full day to truly appreciate it. Most visitors spend 4–5 hours on a gorge cruise and a short walk, then head to Edith Falls. For hikers, allow 2–3 days for the Jatbula Trail or a multi-day canoe trip. If you're short on time, a half-day can cover a cruise and visitor centre, but you'll want to linger.
