In the heart of the Red Centre, Tennant Creek is a rugged outback town that pulses with gold-rush history and Aboriginal culture. Surrounded by spinifex plains and ancient granite outcrops, it’s a genuine frontier settlement where the pub banter is as dry as the landscape. For travellers on the Stuart Highway, it’s a welcome stopover with a surprising depth of stories – from the legendary Nyinkka (perentie lizard) to the ghosts of miners who once made this Australia’s third-largest goldfield.
Highlights & What to See
- Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Culture Centre – A superb museum and gallery run by the Warumungu people, with vivid storytelling, artefacts, and a rooftop view over the town. Don’t miss the bush-tucker garden.
- Battery Hill Mining Centre – Explore a historic gold battery, walk through a re-created underground mine, and try your hand at gold panning. The 360-degree view from the top is worth the climb.
- Devil’s Marbles (Karlu Karlu) – 100 km north of town, these enormous balancing boulders are a sacred site and a photographer’s dream, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Lake Mary Ann – A surprising desert oasis just south of town, perfect for a picnic or birdwatching. It’s a popular swimming spot for locals (and croc-free).
- Tennant Creek Telegraph Station – One of the original Overland Telegraph stations, with restored buildings and a sense of isolation that still resonates.
