Standley Chasm

Standley Chasm, a dramatic fissure in the West MacDonnell Ranges, is one of the Red Centre’s most photogenic natural wonders. Carved by ancient water flows through quartzite rock, the narrow chasm walls soar 80 metres high, creating a cool, shaded sanctuary that feels a world away from the desert heat. Just 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs, it’s an easy half-day escape that rewards early risers with spectacular light shows as the midday sun ignites the ochre walls.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, including the walk and time at the kiosk. For the best light, aim to arrive around 10:30 am and stay until after the midday glow. If you’re combining with other West MacDonnell sites, allocate a full morning or afternoon – Standley Chasm pairs perfectly with a self-drive itinerary along Larapinta Drive.
