Nitmiluk Gorge, also known as Katherine Gorge, is a stunning series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River in the Northern Territory. This ancient landscape, part of Nitmiluk National Park, offers dramatic cliffs, tranquil waterways, and rich Indigenous culture. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the Top End, combining adventure, natural beauty, and Aboriginal heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Boat Cruises: The best way to experience the gorge is by guided boat tour, which takes you through the first two or three gorges, revealing towering cliffs, wildlife, and rock art.
- Canoeing & Kayaking: Rent a canoe to explore the gorges at your own pace; paddle through calm waters and spot freshwater crocodiles, birds, and ancient cycads.
- Scenic Flights: Take a helicopter or light plane flight for a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the entire gorge system and the surrounding savannah.
- Walking Trails: Hike the Jatbula Trail (a multi-day trek) or shorter walks like the Baruwei Lookout Loop for panoramic views over the gorge.
- Indigenous Rock Art: View ancient Jawoyn rock art sites along the gorge walls, with guided tours offering cultural insights.
- Swimming: Cool off in designated swimming spots (check conditions – crocodiles may be present in some areas).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at Nitmiluk Gorge, which allows for a morning boat cruise and an afternoon canoe or short walk. If you’re short on time, a half-day (3–4 hours) can cover a boat tour and a quick lookout hike. For the full experience, including a scenic flight or multi-day trek, plan for two days. The dry season (May–September) offers the best weather and wildlife viewing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine: The nearby town of Katherine (30 km away) is the regional hub, with the famous Katherine Hot Springs and the Katherine Outback Experience.
- Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) itself is the main attraction, but consider combining with:
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: A limestone cave system just south of Katherine, offering guided tours through underground chambers with stalactites and unique wildlife.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A beautiful plunge pool and waterfall in Nitmiluk National Park, perfect for swimming and a short walk (about 45 km north).
- Mataranka Thermal Pool: Iconic warm spring-fed pools surrounded by palm forest, ideal for a relaxing soak (about 100 km south).
- Kakadu National Park: A world heritage site with incredible biodiversity, rock art, and wetlands, about 2.5 hours north – great for a longer itinerary.
