About 100 kilometres south of Katherine, the Mataranka Thermal Pools are a shimmering oasis in the heart of the Northern Territory's red dust. Fed by the ancient Roper River aquifer, these crystal-clear, 34°C springs are surrounded by towering paperbark trees and lush tropical vegetation, creating an almost surreal swimming experience. It's a place where you can float in warm, gin-clear water while listening to the chorus of birds and cicadas – a perfect antidote to a long day on the road.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs: A short walk from the main pool, Bitter Springs is smaller and quieter, with a gentle current that lets you drift downstream through a palm-fringed channel. It's a favourite for a lazy afternoon float.
- Rainbow Springs (Mataranka Main Pool): The larger, more developed pool with a sandy bottom, change rooms, and picnic facilities. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom and small fish darting around your feet.
- Elsey National Park: The thermal pools are the centrepiece of this park, but also explore the surrounding woodlands and wetlands. Keep an eye out for wallabies, goannas, and a huge variety of birdlife.
- Mataranka Homestead & Stockyard Gallery: Learn about the region's pastoral history and the famous novel We of the Never Never at this historic homestead, which also has a bar and restaurant for a cold drink after your swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
You could comfortably experience the pools in a half-day, especially if you're passing through on the Stuart Highway. However, to truly unwind, plan to stay for a full day – bring a picnic, float in both springs, and take a short walk in Elsey National Park. Many travellers combine it with a night at the nearby caravan park or one of the campgrounds in the national park, allowing for an early morning or sunset soak when the pools are at their most serene.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine & Nitmiluk National Park: Just an hour north, Katherine offers the stunning Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, where you can canoe, cruise, or hike among dramatic sandstone cliffs.
- Litchfield National Park: About three hours west, Litchfield's plunge pools and waterfalls (Florence, Wangi, and Buley Rockholes) make a fantastic contrast to the thermal springs.
- Katherine Outback Experience: A working station and show that gives insight into outback life, horse training, and stockman skills – a great stop between Mataranka and Katherine.
- Daly Waters Pub: A quirky, historic outback pub about 200 kilometres south, famous for its memorabilia-covered walls and lively atmosphere – a classic NT road-trip stop.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: South of Katherine, these limestone caves offer guided tours through ancient formations and a chance to see rare ghost bats.
