Leliyn (Edith Falls) is a refreshing oasis in the arid heart of the Northern Territory, part of the Nitmiluk National Park. The falls cascade into a series of emerald plunge pools surrounded by rugged sandstone escarpments and paperbark trees. It's a quieter, more intimate alternative to the nearby Katherine Gorge, perfect for a swim, a picnic, or a short walk that immerses you in the ancient landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the main plunge pool – The large, deep pool at the base of the falls is perfect for cooling off after a walk. The water is clear and inviting, with a sandy bottom and a small beach area.
- Leliyn Trail (2.6 km loop) – This easy to moderate walk takes you above the falls to a series of smaller pools and rock ledges with panoramic views of the valley. Look for freshwater crocodiles basking on the rocks (they're harmless if left alone).
- Upper pools and cascades – For a more secluded experience, continue along the trail to the upper pools, where you can find your own private swimming spot surrounded by bush.
- Birdwatching and wildlife – Keep an eye out for rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and wallabies around the waterhole. The area is also known for its butterfly populations after rain.
- Picnic facilities and camping – The site has shaded picnic tables, barbecues, and a small campground (bookable via Parks NT). It's a great spot for a relaxed lunch or an overnight stay under the stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which allows time for the Leliyn Trail loop and a swim. If you want to fully relax and explore the upper pools, plan for half a day. The falls are best visited in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. If you're camping, you can easily fill a full day with walks, swimming, and stargazing.
