Katherine, a vibrant outback town in the Northern Territory, is your gateway to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park and the iconic Katherine River. With a rich Indigenous heritage and a laid-back frontier vibe, it's a must-stop on any Top End road trip. The town's warm climate and proximity to gorges, hot springs, and ancient rock art make it an ideal base for adventure and cultural exploration.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least two full days to experience Katherine's highlights. Spend the first day exploring Nitmiluk Gorge with a morning cruise and afternoon canoeing. On day two, visit Cutta Cutta Caves in the morning, then soak in the hot springs before a cultural tour at Top Didj. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, Katherine works well as a two-night stop between Darwin and Alice Springs or the Kimberley.
