Glen Helen is a remote oasis in the heart of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering a dramatic landscape of red cliffs, a permanent waterhole, and a historic homestead. This is a place to soak up the outback atmosphere, swim in the cool waters, and explore the rugged beauty of Central Australia. The Glen Helen Resort provides accommodation and a bar, making it a convenient base for hiking and 4WD adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Glen Helen Waterhole: A stunning, deep waterhole at the base of red cliffs, perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day. The water is usually clear and cool, and the surrounding gorge is a peaceful spot for a picnic.
- Glen Helen Homestead: This historic stone building dates back to the 1870s and offers a glimpse into the region's pastoral past. It now houses a small museum and the resort's bar and restaurant.
- Ormiston Gorge: A short drive away, this spectacular gorge features a permanent waterhole and excellent walking trails, including the challenging Ormiston Pound Walk.
- Ochre Pits: An important Aboriginal cultural site where ochre was traditionally mined for ceremonial use. The vibrant colours of the ochre deposits are a photographer's delight.
- Redbank Gorge: A remote and narrow gorge that offers a challenging but rewarding walk through water and over rocks, leading to a beautiful waterhole at the end.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Glen Helen and the nearby gorges. If you're staying at the resort, allow two days to fully appreciate the area: one day for the waterhole, homestead, and short walks, and another for a longer hike like the Ormiston Pound Walk or a 4WD trip to Redbank Gorge. The best time to visit is between April and October, when the weather is cooler.
