Redbank Gorge, a dramatic chasm carved through the rust-red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, is one of the Northern Territory's most rewarding desert experiences. About 160km west of Alice Springs, this gorge offers a wild, silent beauty that feels a world away from the beaten track. It's a place where the ochre cliffs tower above a permanent waterhole, inviting you to swim, scramble, or simply soak in the ancient stillness.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim the Gorge: The deep, cool waterhole is the heart of the gorge. In warmer months, a swim between the towering cliffs is an unforgettable experience – the water is crystal clear and refreshingly cold.
- Scramble to the Top: A rough but rewarding track leads up the southern side of the gorge to a lookout with panoramic views over the surrounding ranges. It's steep and requires care, but the perspective from above is worth every step.
- Wildlife Spotting: Black-footed rock-wallabies are often seen on the cliffs at dawn and dusk. Keep an eye out for peregrine falcons soaring overhead and, if you're lucky, the rare centralian tree frog near the water.
- Photography at Golden Hour: The gorge walls glow a deep, fiery red in the late afternoon light. This is the time to capture the full drama of the landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Redbank Gorge, which allows for a refreshing swim and the lookout scramble. If you're keen on a longer exploration, consider a half-day trip from Alice Springs (allow 4–5 hours driving return). For a more immersive experience, camp overnight at the nearby Redbank Gorge campground (basic facilities) and enjoy the gorge in the soft light of morning and evening.
