Elliott is a tiny but welcoming roadhouse town on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, roughly halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs. It’s the kind of place where the vast, red-earth landscape meets the blue skies, and the pace of life slows to a crawl. For travellers on the epic drive through the outback, Elliott offers a refreshing pit stop with genuine local character, a chance to stretch your legs, and a glimpse into the region’s pastoral history and Indigenous culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Elliott Hotel & Roadhouse – The heart of town, serving up cold beers, classic pub meals, and a friendly outback atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to chat with locals and fellow travellers.
- Longreach Waterhole – A peaceful, permanent waterhole on the Newcastle Creek, just a short drive from town. Great for birdwatching, a picnic, or a refreshing dip in the heat.
- Kulumindini Well – A historic artesian bore and well that once supplied water for the Overland Telegraph Line and early pastoralists. A small slice of outback history.
- Elliott Community & Cultural Centre – Learn about the local Jingili people and the town’s pioneering past through displays and artefacts.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, Elliott offers some of the most spectacular night skies in the Territory. Lie back and watch the Milky Way stretch across the outback.
Suggested Time to Spend
Elliott is best as a short stopover – allow 1–2 hours to stretch your legs, grab a meal, and check out the waterhole. If you’re looking to break the long drive between Alice Springs and Katherine, an overnight stay at the hotel or caravan park gives you time to enjoy sunset by the waterhole and a proper outback evening. Most travellers spend just a couple of hours here before continuing north or south.
