Eliot is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path settlement in the heart of the MacDonnell Ranges, offering a genuine outback experience far from the crowds. Surrounded by red desert landscapes, ancient gorges, and vast starry skies, this is a place for travellers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty. The nearby West MacDonnell National Park provides spectacular hiking and swimming opportunities, while the local history of the Arrernte people adds deep cultural resonance.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves in Alice Springs and explore the West MacDonnell Ranges on day trips, but to really soak in the tranquillity of Eliot, plan for at least two to three days. Spend one day visiting the gorges and waterholes closest to Alice (Ellery Creek, Standley Chasm), and a second day venturing further west to Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen. If you have a third day, consider a longer walk like the Larapinta Trail section near Ormiston, or simply relax and enjoy the outback silence.
