Buley Rockhole is a series of cascading rock pools in Litchfield National Park, about 100 km south of Darwin. This natural water park is a quintessential Top End swimming spot, where crystal-clear water flows over smooth sandstone ledges, creating a chain of shallow pools and deeper plunge holes. Surrounded by monsoon forest, it's a refreshing escape from the tropical heat and a perfect place to cool off after exploring the park's other attractions.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming in the cascading pools – The main draw is the series of rockholes linked by small waterfalls. You can wade, float, or simply lounge in the cool, clear water. The pools are safe for all ages, but always check conditions after heavy rain.
- Picnicking by the water – Shaded picnic tables and grassy areas make this an ideal spot for a leisurely lunch. Bring your own food and enjoy the sounds of trickling water.
- Exploring the surrounding monsoon forest – The lush vegetation around the rockhole is home to birds and butterflies. A short walk from the carpark leads you to the pools through a beautiful pocket of jungle.
- Combining with nearby waterfalls – Buley Rockhole is part of a trio of popular swimming spots. It's just a short drive from Florence Falls and Wangi Falls, each offering different swimming experiences.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Buley Rockhole, though it's easy to while away a whole afternoon if you're picnicking and swimming. The site is best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and the midday sun. It's a great stop on a full-day Litchfield itinerary, allowing time to also see the magnetic termite mounds, Florence Falls, and Wangi Falls.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Florence Falls – A stunning double waterfall with a plunge pool at the base, just a 5-minute drive away. You can walk down to the pool for a swim or view it from the lookout.
- Wangi Falls – Another iconic swimming waterfall, about 15 minutes north. It's larger and more crowded, but the pool is expansive and perfect for a dip.
- Tolmer Falls – A scenic waterfall that cascades over a high cliff into a deep pool (no swimming allowed). The lookout offers great views of the escarpment.
- Magnetic Termite Mounds – Fascinating structures built by termites, located near the park entrance. A short boardwalk explains their orientation and ecology.
- Batchelor – The nearest town, with a few cafes, a supermarket, and the Litchfield Tourist Information Centre. It's a good base for supplies or a meal.
- Darwin – The capital of the Northern Territory, about 1.5 hours' drive north. Combine your Litchfield visit with time in Darwin to explore its markets, museums, and harbour cruises.
