Berry Springs Nature Park is a lush oasis in the arid MacDonnell Ranges, offering a refreshing escape with crystal-clear spring-fed pools, shaded picnic spots, and easy walking trails. This is a beloved local swimming hole where you can float in cool, emerald water surrounded by paperbark trees and pandanus palms. It's an ideal spot to break a long drive through the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the main pool – The large, spring-fed pool is perfect for a cooling dip, with clear water and a sandy bottom. Arrive early to claim a shady spot.
- Walk the Berry Springs Nature Walk – A short 1.5 km loop trail that meanders through monsoon vine forest, past the springs and along the creek, with chances to spot birds and water dragons.
- Picnic by the water – Several grassy areas with tables and gas barbecues make for a relaxing lunch. Bring your own food as there are no cafes on site.
- Spot wildlife – Keep an eye out for red-tailed black cockatoos, great bowerbirds, and the occasional freshwater crocodile (harmless if left alone).
- Visit the historic Berry Springs homestead – The ruins of an early 20th-century pastoral station add a touch of pioneer history to your visit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 2–3 hours to enjoy a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you're keen on a longer hike, combine it with the nearby Woodforde River walk (allow an extra hour). Most visitors come as a half-day outing from Alice Springs, arriving mid-morning to beat the heat and leaving by early afternoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – Just 45 minutes north, the regional hub offers galleries, the Desert Park, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum.
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic gorge in the West MacDonnell National Park, great for walks and rock-wallaby spotting.
- Ormiston Gorge – Famous for its permanent waterhole and the challenging Ormiston Pound walk, about an hour west.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow chasm with spectacular light at midday, located 30 minutes from Berry Springs.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – Another popular swimming spot with a large, deep waterhole surrounded by red cliffs.
