The Red Centre Way is Australia’s ultimate outback road trip, a 660-kilometre loop that threads through the heart of the Northern Territory, linking the iconic monolith of Uluru with the rugged gorges of the MacDonnell Ranges. This isn’t just a drive; it’s a journey through ancient landscapes, deep red earth, and the living culture of the Anangu people. Expect vast horizons, star-filled skies, and a profound sense of isolation that’s both humbling and exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Witness the colour-shifting majesty of Uluru at sunrise or sunset, and explore the domed rock formations of Kata Tjuta on the Valley of the Winds walk.
- Kings Canyon – Hike the rim of this immense sandstone chasm in Watarrka National Park; the 6km rim walk offers dizzying views and a swim in the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – Drive the Larapinta Drive to reach spectacular gaps and gorges like Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge, where you can swim in permanent waterholes.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – An excellent introduction to the region’s wildlife and Aboriginal plant use, with a nocturnal house and free-flying birds of prey.
- Rainbow Valley – A striking sandstone bluff that glows with bands of colour in the late afternoon light, just a short detour south of the Stuart Highway.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a minimum of 4–5 days to do the full loop justice. Two nights at Uluru allows for sunset, sunrise, and a day exploring Kata Tjuta; then drive to Kings Canyon (spend one night), and finish with two nights in Alice Springs to explore the West MacDonnells. If you’re short on time, you can complete a three-day express: Day 1 Alice to Uluru via the Stuart Highway, Day 2 Uluru to Kings Canyon, Day 3 Kings Canyon back to Alice via the Mereenie Loop (4WD only). The road is sealed except for the Mereenie Loop, which requires a permit (available locally) and is often rough—check conditions before you go.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kings Creek Station – A working cattle station offering helicopter flights over Kings Canyon and camel rides.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to the ancient palm-filled Palm Valley, accessible by 4WD only.
- Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve – A towering sandstone pillar with Aboriginal and explorer history, a 4WD detour from the Stuart Highway.
- MacDonnell Ranges East – Explore the less-visited eastern end, including Trephina Gorge and N’Dhala Gorge, rich in rock art.
- Alice Springs – The gateway town offers the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, the School of the Air, and the Araluen Cultural Precinct.
