Ormiston Gorge
Ormiston Gorge is a spectacular natural amphitheatre carved into the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 135 km west of Alice Springs. Its permanent waterhole, flanked by towering cliffs and ghost gums, is a magnet for swimmers and photographers alike. The gorge is part of the Larapinta Trail and offers some of the most accessible yet dramatic outback scenery in the Northern Territory.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge Waterhole – a deep, clear pool perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk; the reflections of the red cliffs in the water are mesmerising.
- Gorge Rim Walk – a 7 km loop that climbs to the top of the gorge for panoramic views over the surrounding ranges and the waterhole far below; allow 3–4 hours.
- Ghost Gum Walk – a shorter, 2 km return stroll that follows the creek and passes ancient ghost gums, with excellent birdwatching opportunities.
- Permanent waterhole swimming – one of the few reliable swimming spots in the region; the water is cool and inviting even in the heat of summer.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, peregrine falcons, and a variety of reptiles basking on the rocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–4 hours) at Ormiston Gorge, which is enough to complete the Ghost Gum Walk, swim in the waterhole, and enjoy a picnic. If you want to tackle the full Gorge Rim Walk, plan for a full day (5–6 hours) and start early to avoid the midday heat. The gorge is a highlight of the West MacDonnell Ranges, so it's best combined with other nearby gorges in a multi-day self-drive itinerary.
