Ellery Creek Big Hole is a shimmering desert oasis tucked into the West MacDonnell Ranges, a cool waterhole framed by towering red cliffs and ghost gums. It's one of the Territory's most beloved swimming spots, offering a refreshing break from the arid heat and a chance to soak in the stark beauty of Central Australia. A short walk from the carpark leads you to this permanent waterhole, where the contrast between the deep blue water and rust-coloured gorge walls is simply stunning.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is plenty for a swim and the short gorge walk. If you're keen to hike the longer Ellery Creek Loop (about 3 km, one hour), budget an extra hour. It's a perfect midday stop on a self-drive itinerary along Larapinta Drive, or a relaxed afternoon escape from Alice Springs (just 90 km west).
