Ellery Creek Big Hole is a shimmering desert oasis tucked into the West MacDonnell Ranges, a cool waterhole framed by towering red cliffs and ghost gums. It's one of the Territory's most beloved swimming spots, offering a refreshing break from the arid heat and a chance to soak in the stark beauty of Central Australia. A short walk from the carpark leads you to this permanent waterhole, where the contrast between the deep blue water and rust-coloured gorge walls is simply stunning.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming in the Big Hole – Plunge into the deep, clear waterhole; it's one of the best natural pools in the region, especially welcome on a hot afternoon.
- Ellery Creek Gorge Walk – Follow the 3 km loop trail that climbs above the waterhole for panoramic views over the gorge and surrounding ranges.
- Geological wonders – Look for the ancient, folded rock layers in the gorge walls, which tell a story of billion-year-old seabeds and tectonic shifts.
- Birdwatching and wildlife – Spot black-footed rock wallabies on the cliffs and listen for the calls of zebra finches and honeyeaters among the river red gums.
- Sunset colours – Stay late to watch the cliffs glow orange and red as the sun drops behind the range.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is plenty for a swim and the short gorge walk. If you're keen to hike the longer Ellery Creek Loop (about 3 km, one hour), budget an extra hour. It's a perfect midday stop on a self-drive itinerary along Larapinta Drive, or a relaxed afternoon escape from Alice Springs (just 90 km west).
