Deep in the MacDonnell Ranges, Arltunga Historical Reserve is a ghost town that tells the story of Central Australia's gold rush. Once a bustling settlement of 3000, today it's a hauntingly beautiful collection of stone ruins and restored buildings set against a dramatic red desert landscape. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the harsh lives of miners and the short-lived boom that drew them here.
Highlights & What to See
- Government Residency & Battery – Explore the restored stone building and the old stamp battery, where you can see how ore was crushed. The self-guided walk takes you past the police station, post office, and miner's camp.
- Arltunga Bush Hotel ruins – The remains of this 1900s pub are a poignant reminder of the town's heyday; imagine dusty miners quenching their thirst after a long day.
- White Range & MacDonnell Range views – Drive or walk to the lookout for sweeping panoramas over the surrounding gorges and the dry bed of the Hale River.
- Historic cemetery – Wander among the graves of early settlers, many marked by simple iron crosses and stone cairns, offering a quiet connection to the past.
- Seasonal wildflowers – After good rains, the desert floor bursts into colour with Sturt's desert peas and everlastings, contrasting with the ochre ruins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to explore Arltunga properly – the drive from Alice Springs takes about 1.5 hours each way, and you'll want 2–3 hours to wander the site, read the interpretive signs, and soak up the atmosphere. Combine it with a picnic lunch; there's no café, so bring your own food and water. For a deeper dive, join a guided tour (check seasonal availability) or stay overnight at the nearby Ross River Resort.
