Deep in the MacDonnell Ranges, Arltunga Historical Reserve is a ghost town that tells the story of Central Australia's gold rush. Once a bustling settlement of 3000, today it's a hauntingly beautiful collection of stone ruins and restored buildings set against a dramatic red desert landscape. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the harsh lives of miners and the short-lived boom that drew them here.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to explore Arltunga properly – the drive from Alice Springs takes about 1.5 hours each way, and you'll want 2–3 hours to wander the site, read the interpretive signs, and soak up the atmosphere. Combine it with a picnic lunch; there's no café, so bring your own food and water. For a deeper dive, join a guided tour (check seasonal availability) or stay overnight at the nearby Ross River Resort.
