Daly River

Flowing through the heart of the Northern Territory's Top End, the Daly River is a wild, croc-filled waterway that offers a raw outback experience. This remote region, about 220 km south of Darwin, is a haven for barramundi fishing, birdwatching, and immersing yourself in Indigenous culture. The river's moody landscapes – from paperbark swamps to towering termite mounds – feel a world away from the tourist trail.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers base themselves at a riverside camp or lodge for 2–3 nights to fully experience the fishing and relaxed pace. Day-trippers from Darwin or Litchfield National Park can do a flying visit, but the long drive (3 hours each way) makes an overnight stay far more rewarding. Plan your trip in the dry season (May–Oct) when roads are passable and wildlife congregates around the river.
