Yellow Water Billabong, on the South Alligator River floodplain in Kakadu National Park, is a wetlands wonderland teeming with wildlife. Dawn and dusk cruises glide past lotus lilies, paperbark forests, and waterholes where saltwater crocodiles laze and hundreds of bird species gather. It’s an essential stop for any Kakadu itinerary, offering a front-row seat to the rhythms of the Top End.
Highlights & What to See
- Wildlife cruises – The main event: spot saltwater crocs, jabirus, sea eagles, and buffalo. Sunrise cruises are magical as mist lifts off the water.
- Birdwatching paradise – Over 280 species, including comb-crested jacanas, great egrets, and the elusive red-tailed black cockatoo.
- Lotus lily carpet – From May to October, the water surface is covered in pink and white lotus flowers – a photographer’s dream.
- Aboriginal cultural insights – Local Bininj/Mungguy guides share stories of the land’s creation and traditional use of plants and animals.
- Sunset over the wetlands – The viewing platform at the nearby Mamukala Wetlands offers a stunning panorama as the sky turns orange and purple.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate half a day: a 1.5–2 hour cruise (best at sunrise or sunset) plus time to explore the boardwalk and bird hide. If you’re a keen birder or photographer, you could easily spend a full morning or afternoon here. Combine with a visit to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre (20 minutes away) for a deeper understanding of Kakadu’s culture.
