The West Macdonnell Ranges stretch west from Alice Springs, a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and ochre-red cliffs that catch the changing light from dawn to dusk. This is the heart of Arrernte country, where sacred sites, waterholes, and ghost gums create a landscape that feels both timeless and alive. For self-drivers, the sealed Larapinta Drive and unsealed Namatjira Drive offer a classic outback itinerary, with walks, swims, and cultural insights around every bend.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the range, home to black-footed rock wallabies; best visited early morning or late afternoon for the golden glow on the cliffs.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, sheer-walled chasm where light floods in at midday; a short, easy walk leads to the dramatic amphitheatre.
- Ochre Pits – A sacred site where Aboriginal people have sourced ochre for ceremony and art for millennia; the layered colours are a photographer’s dream.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, permanent waterhole framed by red rocks and cool river red gums; perfect for a refreshing swim after a desert drive.
- Serpentine Gorge – A winding gorge with a lookout offering sweeping views over the range; the walk in is short and rewards with a serene waterhole.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the base of towering cliffs; the Gorge Walk leads to panoramic views over the Finke River valley.
- Mount Sonder Lookout – The fourth-highest peak in the NT, visible from the road; the sunrise view from the Redbank Gorge trailhead is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to explore the West Macdonnells at a relaxed pace – one day for the highlights along Namatjira Drive (Standley Chasm to Glen Helen) and another to venture deeper to Redbank Gorge or Mount Sonder. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Alice Springs can cover Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ellery Creek, but you’ll miss the quieter western end. Overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camp at one of the designated bush camps to catch the spectacular sunset and sunrise colours.
