Plunging over a sandstone escarpment into a deep, palm-fringed pool, Twin Falls is one of the Top End’s most dramatic and refreshing waterholes. Located in the heart of Litchfield National Park, this two-tiered cascade is less crowded than its neighbour Florence Falls, offering a more serene bushland escape. The journey involves a short walk and a seasonal boat shuttle (dry season only) across a tranquil creek, adding a sense of adventure. For international travellers, it’s a quintessential Aussie outback oasis – perfect for a cooling swim after a dusty drive, and a vivid encounter with the region’s ancient landscapes and rich Aboriginal culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the base of the falls – The deep, sandy-bottomed plunge pool is safe for swimming in the dry season, with the cascading water providing a natural massage.
- Boat shuttle across the creek – A short, free ferry ride (operated by park rangers) takes you over the creek to the start of the walking track, adding a unique experience.
- Scenic walk to the top of the falls – A 1.6 km return trail climbs through monsoon forest to a lookout with sweeping views over the gorge and the falls’ upper cascade.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking on sandbanks, rainbow bee-eaters, and the occasional agile wallaby.
- Picnic by the creek – Shaded tables and grassy areas near the carpark make for a peaceful lunch spot surrounded by paperbark trees.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 2 to 3 hours, which allows time for the boat shuttle, a swim, and the short walk to the top lookout. If you’re combining it with Florence Falls and Buley Rockholes, start early to avoid midday heat and crowds. The falls are best visited during the dry season (May to October) when the shuttle operates and the water is clear; in the wet season the falls are spectacular but swimming is not advised due to strong currents and crocodile activity.
