Deep in the red heart of Australia, Tennant Creek is a dusty outback town that punches well above its weight. Once the site of a gold rush, today it's a genuine frontier settlement where Aboriginal culture, mining history and vast desert landscapes converge. You'll find a warm, no-fuss community and a handful of surprising attractions that reward the traveller who takes the time to stop.
Highlights & What to See
- Battery Hill Mining Centre – Explore the underground tunnels of a former gold mine, then try your hand at gold panning. The on-site museum does a fine job of telling the town's boom-and-bust story.
- Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre – A striking modern building that showcases the art, stories and traditions of the Warumungu people. Don't miss the bush tucker garden and the guided walks with local elders.
- Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu) – About 100 km south of town, these precariously balanced granite boulders are a sacred site and one of the Territory's most iconic natural wonders. Best at sunrise or sunset.
- Mary Ann Dam – A peaceful waterhole just out of town, perfect for a cooling swim or a picnic. Watch for birdlife and the occasional wallaby.
- Mount Samuel Lookout – A short, steep walk rewards you with panoramic views over the town and the endless spinifex plains beyond.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through on the Stuart Highway and need only a half-day to visit the main sights and refuel. If you want to truly soak up the atmosphere, spend one night – that gives you time for the Devil's Marbles at sunset and a morning at Nyinkka Nyunyu. Two nights is ample unless you're planning a longer stay to explore the region's remote stations and 4WD tracks.
