Simpson Gap is a dramatic cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, just 18 km west of Alice Springs. This iconic natural landmark offers a quintessential outback experience, with towering red cliffs, a permanent waterhole, and excellent walking trails. It's a must-stop on any Lasseter Highway itinerary for its striking geology and serene atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gap itself – Stand at the viewing platform and marvel at the sheer 100-metre walls carved by ancient water flows. The contrast of the red rock against the blue sky is breathtaking.
- Waterhole and birdlife – The permanent waterhole at the base attracts black-footed rock-wallabies and a variety of birds, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Ghost Gum walking track – A short, easy 1 km loop that leads through spinifex and ghost gums to a lookout over the gap. Ideal for all fitness levels.
- Sunset views – The cliffs glow a deep ochre at sunset, making it a prime spot for photography. Bring a picnic and enjoy the changing light.
- Aboriginal cultural significance – The site is part of the Arrernte people's dreaming stories; interpretive signs explain its importance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes here, but if you want to walk the Ghost Gum track and relax by the waterhole, allow 1–1.5 hours. Sunset visits are popular, so plan to arrive around 30 minutes before dusk. It's a quick detour from the road, so you can easily combine it with other West MacDonnell sights in a half-day drive from Alice Springs.
