Standley Chasm is a dramatic sandstone cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs. This narrow gorge, known as Angkerle Atwatye to the local Arrernte people, is at its most photogenic when the midday sun floods the red walls with light. The short walk in is easy, making it a perfect stop for travellers exploring the Lasseter Highway region.
Highlights & What to See
- Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm): The main attraction is the 80-metre-high chasm itself; time your visit for around midday to see the walls glow fiery orange.
- Interpretive Walk: Follow the 1.2-kilometre path through spinifex and ghost gums, with signs explaining Arrernte culture and bush tucker.
- Kiosk and Gallery: Grab a coffee or a light meal at the licensed kiosk, and browse Aboriginal art and crafts at the on-site gallery.
- Lookout Views: A short side track leads to a lookout over the surrounding ranges – great for wider-angle photos.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about an hour to an hour and a half walking the chasm trail and exploring the kiosk area. If you want to linger for the best light, plan for 2 hours. The chasm is easily combined with a half-day or full-day drive from Alice Springs along the Larapinta Drive.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The nearest major hub, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum and Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Simpsons Gap: A scenic waterhole and walking trails, part of the West MacDonnell National Park.
- Ormiston Gorge: A spectacular gorge with a permanent waterhole and the popular Pound Walk.
- Glen Helen Gorge: A wide, picturesque gorge with a resort and campground.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: A popular swimming spot with towering red cliffs.
- Serpentine Gorge: A narrow, less-visited chasm with a short, steep walk to a lookout.
