Silverton is a historic mining town in the far west of New South Wales, not far from Broken Hill. It's a living museum of the Australian outback, with a population of around 50 people and a main street that looks much as it did in the 1880s. The town is famous for its role as a filming location for movies like Mad Max 2 and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and it's a must-visit for anyone interested in the rugged history and culture of the outback.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Silverton is compact enough to explore in a half-day, but to fully appreciate its history and the surrounding landscape, plan on a full day. Arrive in the morning to visit the museum and gaol, have lunch at the hotel, then head to the Daydream Mine in the afternoon. If you're a film buff, you could easily spend an extra hour at the Mad Max 2 Museum. The town is also a great base for photography at sunrise or sunset, when the red dirt and old buildings glow in the golden light.
