Ord River Diversion Dam is a striking feat of engineering set against the rugged Kimberley landscape, just outside Kununurra in Western Australia's far north. This massive concrete structure channels water from the Ord River into an extensive irrigation system, creating a lush patchwork of farmland in an otherwise arid region. The dam is also the gateway to the larger Lake Argyle, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's agricultural transformation and a peaceful spot for picnics and birdwatching.
Highlights & What to See
- Diversion Dam Lookout: Walk across the top of the dam for panoramic views of the Ord River upstream and the patchwork of farmland downstream. The contrast between the deep red cliffs and the green irrigation channels is quintessential Kimberley.
- Ord River Irrigation Area: Take a short drive to see the vast fields of sandalwood, mangoes, and sugarcane that thrive thanks to the dam. The area is a photographer's dream, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light.
- Birdwatching: The dam and its surrounding wetlands attract a huge variety of birdlife, including brolgas, jabirus, and whistling kites. Bring binoculars for the best views.
- Lily Creek Lagoon: A short walk from the dam, this tranquil lagoon is perfect for a swim or a paddle in a kayak. It's also a great spot for spotting freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks.
- Pump House and Historic Interpretive Signs: Learn about the history of the Ord River Scheme and the challenges of taming this wild river. The signs provide context for the engineering marvel you're standing on.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour exploring the dam itself, including the lookout and a walk across the structure. However, to fully appreciate the surrounding area, allow at least half a day: combine the dam with a visit to Lily Creek Lagoon and a scenic drive through the irrigation area. If you're keen on birdwatching or photography, plan for a morning or late-afternoon visit when the light is golden and the wildlife is most active.
