Nauiyu Community
Nauiyu Community (formerly known as Daly River) is a small Indigenous settlement on the banks of the Daly River in the Northern Territory, about 220 km south of Darwin. It's a place where traditional Aboriginal culture meets the rugged beauty of the outback, offering travellers a chance to learn about the local Malak Malak people and explore the river's rich ecosystems. The community is a gateway to some of the NT's most pristine natural attractions, with a strong focus on cultural tourism and fishing.
Highlights & What to See
- Merrepen Arts Centre: A must-visit for authentic Indigenous art, including paintings, textiles, and carvings created by local artists. You can watch them at work and purchase pieces directly.
- Daly River: Famous for barramundi fishing, the river is also perfect for boat cruises, birdwatching, and spotting crocodiles. The lush riparian vegetation contrasts sharply with the surrounding dry savannah.
- Nauiyu Community Cultural Tours: Join a guided walk with Malak Malak elders to learn about bush tucker, traditional medicine, and Dreamtime stories tied to the landscape.
- Daly River Crossing: A scenic spot for a picnic or a swim (beware of crocs in the wet season). The crossing is also a great place to watch the sunset over the river.
- Wet Season Waterfalls: After summer rains, nearby waterfalls like Florence Falls and Wangi Falls in Litchfield National Park are spectacular – about an hour's drive away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day to immerse yourself in the community's offerings. Start with a morning tour at Merrepen Arts Centre, then head to the river for a fishing charter or a leisurely cruise. If you're staying overnight (the community has basic accommodation and a caravan park), take an afternoon walk with a local guide. Most travellers combine Nauiyu with a broader itinerary through the Top End, spending 2–3 days in the region.
