In the heart of the Red Centre, Mount Remarkable National Park is a rugged sanctuary of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and desert woodland. This is a park for hikers and solitude-seekers, where the silence is broken only by bird calls and the crunch of your boots on red dirt. It offers a raw, untamed Australian outback experience far from the crowds of Uluru.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Remarkable Summit Walk: A challenging 12 km return hike that rewards with sweeping views over the park and beyond to the MacDonnell Ranges. The summit feels like the top of the world.
- Gorge Hikes: Explore the cool, shaded depths of gorge systems – keep an eye out for wallabies and the rare black-footed rock-wallaby.
- Bush Camping Under the Stars: Pitch a tent at one of the basic campgrounds and experience the Milky Way in all its glory, far from light pollution.
- Wildlife Watching: Dawn and dusk are prime times to spot red kangaroos, emus, and a dazzling array of birds, including the majestic wedge-tailed eagle.
- Outback Flora: Ancient ghost gums, spinifex, and wildflowers after rain create a starkly beautiful landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to truly appreciate Mount Remarkable. Hit the summit walk early in the morning to beat the heat (start by 7 AM), then spend the afternoon exploring the gorge trails or simply relaxing at your camp. If you're self-driving, this is an excellent stop for a night – arrive the evening before, hike the next day, and leave the following morning. A half-day is possible if you only tackle a shorter walk, but you'll miss the park's full magic.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
