Mataranka Thermal Pool is a crystalline oasis in the heart of the Northern Territory's outback, where warm, mineral-rich waters bubble up from the Great Artesian Basin into a palm-fringed swimming hole. This natural spring maintains a constant temperature of 34°C (93°F), making it an irresistible spot for a soak after a long drive along the Lasseter Highway. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom, and the surrounding pandanus palms and paperbarks create a dreamy, almost tropical atmosphere that feels worlds away from the red dust of the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Thermal Pool swimming: Float in the warm, crystal-clear water of the main pool—it's like a natural spa, and the iron-rich water is said to have therapeutic properties.
- Bitter Springs: A short walk or drive away, this smaller, more secluded thermal pool offers a quieter experience with the same warm, clear water and a lush, shady setting.
- Elsey National Park: The thermal pools are the highlight, but the park also offers walks through monsoon forest and along the Roper River, plus birdwatching for species like the red-tailed black cockatoo.
- Mataranka Homestead: This historic outback property (famous as the setting for the novel We of the Never Never) has a bar, camping, and a museum that paints a vivid picture of pioneer life.
- Stockyard Gallery: A quirky gallery showcasing local Aboriginal art and crafts, plus a café serving excellent coffee and homemade damper.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day here, allowing time for a long soak in the thermal pool, a short walk to Bitter Springs, and a wander around the homestead. If you're passing through on the Lasseter Highway, even a quick 1–2 hour dip is hugely rewarding—the water is always waiting at the perfect temperature. For a more relaxed pace, stay overnight at the caravan park or campground to enjoy the pool at sunrise or sunset when the light is golden and the crowds thin out.
