Imagine slipping into a warm, crystal-clear pool surrounded by towering palm trees and red earth — that's Mataranka Hot Springs. This thermal oasis in the Northern Territory's outback is fed by the same underground water that flows through the iconic Katherine Gorge. The constant 34°C (93°F) temperature makes it perfect for a relaxing soak any time of year. The springs are part of Elsey National Park, a place steeped in Aboriginal culture and immortalized in the novel 'We of the Never Never'. It's a must-stop on the Lasseter Highway, offering a refreshing break from the red dust.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Mataranka Hot Springs can be enjoyed in as little as a couple of hours for a quick dip, but to fully appreciate the park, plan for half a day. Combine a swim with a walk to Bitter Springs and a visit to the homestead. If you're on a self-drive trip along the Lasseter Highway, it's a perfect lunch stop and soak before continuing to Katherine or the Gulf. Overnight camping is available if you want to experience the springs at dawn or dusk when they're at their most serene.
