Mary River National Park is a vast, wild wetland in the Top End of the Northern Territory, renowned for its abundant birdlife, crocodiles, and untouched floodplains. It lies about 100 km east of Darwin, offering a genuine outback experience without the crowds of Kakadu. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, anglers, and nature lovers, with seasonal flooding transforming the landscape into a vibrant ecosystem. Self-drive is the best way to explore, with 4WD recommended after rain.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching at Couzens Lookout – Spot magpie geese, jabirus, and brolgas from this elevated platform overlooking the wetlands.
- Mary River Billabong – Cruise or kayak among water lilies and lotus flowers, with a high chance of seeing saltwater crocodiles basking on the banks.
- Shady Camp – A popular fishing spot for barramundi, especially during the dry season (May–October). The viewing platform offers panoramic river views.
- Wildlife Drives – The park's dirt roads (Waterhouse River Track and Point Stuart Road) are excellent for spotting wallabies, dingoes, and a profusion of birds, including the majestic white-bellied sea eagle.
- Cultural Heritage – The area holds significance for the Limilngan-Wulna people; look for interpretive signs along the Mary River Wetlands Drive.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to explore the park's main sites, but a full day allows for a leisurely cruise or fishing session. If you're keen on birdwatching or photography, plan an overnight stay at the campground near Shady Camp. The park is best visited during the dry season (May–October) when roads are accessible and wildlife congregates around shrinking waterholes.
