Lyndhurst is a tiny, remote roadhouse settlement on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, about 100 km north of Coober Pedy. It's a classic outback pit stop—dusty, quiet, and utterly dependent on the highway traffic. For travellers on the long haul between Alice Springs and Adelaide, Lyndhurst offers a welcome break, fuel, and a taste of life on the edge of the desert. The surrounding landscape is starkly beautiful, with red dirt plains, gibber stones, and distant mesas. Don't expect much more than a pub, a roadhouse, and a few buildings, but that's precisely its charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Lyndhurst Roadhouse – The heart of the settlement, serving cold drinks, basic meals, and fuel. It's a great spot to chat with locals and fellow travellers.
- Stuart Highway – The iconic road itself is a highlight. The sense of isolation and endless horizon is unforgettable.
- Oodnadatta Track – The start of this famous outback track is just south of Lyndhurst. A 4WD adventure through historic rail sites and Aboriginal culture.
- Lake Eyre viewpoint – While not directly in Lyndhurst, the turn-off to Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) is nearby. The vast salt lake, when flooded, is a spectacular sight for birdlife and reflections.
- Farina Ruins – A short detour south to the ghost town of Farina, with restored underground bakery and historic ruins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lyndhurst is a stopover, not a destination. Plan to spend 30 minutes to an hour refuelling and stretching your legs. If you're keen on exploring the Oodnadatta Track or Farina, allow a half-day to a full day. Most travellers pass through on their way between Coober Pedy and Marla or Alice Springs.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coober Pedy – 100 km south, famous for opal mining and underground homes.
- Marla – 100 km north, another roadhouse stop with accommodation and fuel.
- Oodnadatta Track – A 4WD route linking Lyndhurst to Marla via historic sites.
- Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) – Australia's largest salt lake, accessible via the Oodnadatta Track or by scenic flight from Coober Pedy.
- Innamincka – Further east, a remote outback town with Cooper Creek and a historic pub.
