Leliyn (Edith Falls)

Leliyn, commonly known as Edith Falls, is a stunning series of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools set within the rugged sandstone escarpments of Nitmiluk National Park, about 60 km north of Katherine. This quieter, less commercialised sibling of the famous Katherine Gorge offers a more intimate and refreshing escape into the Top End's ancient landscape. The main attraction is the large, crystal-clear pool at the base of the upper falls, perfect for a cooling swim, surrounded by paperbark trees and dramatic cliffs. A network of walking trails leads to more secluded pools and panoramic views, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and those seeking a serene outback swimming experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough time for a swim at the upper pool and a walk on the Leliyn Trail loop. If you plan to hike to Sweetwater Pool or simply want to linger and soak up the serenity, allow a half-day. The site is best visited in the cooler dry season (May–September) when the water is clear and the weather is pleasant for walking; the falls flow year-round but are most dramatic after the wet season.
