Kandos is a tiny, unassuming roadhouse settlement on the Lasseter Highway, roughly halfway between Alice Springs and Uluru. It’s not a destination in itself but a practical stop for fuel, a cold drink, and a stretch of the legs in the vast red centre. The real draw lies in the surrounding spinifex plains and the immense, silent desert that stretches in every direction.
Highlights & What to See
- Fuel and Supplies: The roadhouse is a lifeline on this remote stretch – fill up the tank and stock up on snacks and water before pressing on.
- Desert Views: Step outside to absorb the stark beauty of the Central Australian outback. The horizon seems infinite, and the light shifts dramatically from dawn to dusk.
- Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse: A short drive west, this historic roadhouse has a small museum with Aboriginal artefacts and stories of pioneering days.
- Stargazing: At night, the sky here is among the darkest in Australia. Pull over anywhere safe and look up – the Milky Way is staggering.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kandos is a 15–20 minute stop for fuel and a leg stretch. If you’re keen on a longer break, allow half an hour to wander the immediate area and soak in the silence. Most travellers pass through en route to Uluru (2.5 hours west) or back to Alice Springs (3 hours east), so plan to arrive with a full tank and a sense of adventure.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – the iconic monolith and domes, a 2.5-hour drive west.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – a spectacular gorge with rim walks, about 3 hours north-west via Luritja Road.
- Alice Springs – the red centre’s hub, 3 hours east on the Lasseter Highway.
- Mount Conner (Attila) – a flat-topped mesa visible from the highway, often mistaken for Uluru.
- Curtin Springs Station – a working cattle station with camping and meals, 1.5 hours west.
