Ellery Creek Bighole is a stunning desert oasis along the Larapinta Trail, just west of Alice Springs. This permanent waterhole, nestled among red quartzite cliffs and ghost gums, offers a refreshing escape from the arid heat. The cool, deep waters are perfect for a swim, while the surrounding area provides excellent short walks and birdwatching opportunities. It's a must-visit for anyone exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, combining a swim with the short Dolomite Walk. If you're hiking the Larapinta Trail, it's a popular overnight camp spot (permit required). For a relaxed visit, aim for late afternoon when the light softens and the cliffs glow orange. Allow at least half a day if you plan to also explore nearby gaps and gorges along Larapinta Drive.
